Amal Clooney has now become the highest profile lawyer to leave her job over her over her disagreement with the British government’s suggestion. The British government suggested that it could break the international law if it fails to agree a trade deal with the European Union.

In a letter to the British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, she stated that she is quitting her job over the government’s ‘lamentable’ suggestion.

In the letter, she also mentioned that she was ‘dismayed’ to learn that the British government is also planning to override sections of the Brexit withdrawal agreement that Prime Minister Boris Johnson had himself negotiated.

The British government agreed that the legislation could break the international law, but it’s an insurance policy in case of a ‘no-deal’ situation. Johnson said this legislation is extremely important to end the European Union threats of imposing a blockage in the Irish Sea. According to the Prime Minister, such a situation could ‘carve up the country.’

Richard Keen (British government’s law officer for Scotland) and Jonathan Jones (head of legal department) have also quitted their jobs a few weeks ago.

Clooney accepted the role in 2019 as she appreciated the role UK has played in promoting the international legal order.

After speaking to Raab regarding her issues, she got no assurance that any change of position is about to happen.

Consequently, she had not other option to but resign from her job.
