Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said in a video conference that the minimum age of marriage for girls is likely to be revised by the government soon. The Indian government has received a report from the committee which has been built for this purpose which led to the Central government to rethink about the issue. PM Modi also mentioned that women from across the country have been sending letters to the PMO to look into this important matter.

Initially, on 15th August, Narendra Modi addressed this issue in his Independence Day speech. He announced that deliberation is under process by the government on the minimum age of marriage for girls and assured to take the necessary decision for the same.

Currently, the minimum age of marriage for women is 18 years and for men, it is 21 years. According to the experts, the age should be increased to 21 from 18 as it is early for a girl to marry and bear children.
