With Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj approaching, online scammers are taking advantage of devotees. Mumbai residents have been scammed by fake offers for VIP tents and helicopter rides, losing large sums of money to fraudsters.

Case Study: Businesswoman Loses ₹4 Lakh to Fake Booking

A 55-year-old businesswoman from Lower Parel, Mumbai, planning to attend the Maha Kumbh with five companions, fell victim to an online scam. She found a website called “Tentcitymahakumbh.org” while searching for accommodations and travel arrangements. The site displayed luxurious VIP tents and offered flight bookings, convincing her to transfer ₹3.78 lakh to an account falsely named “UP State Tourism II.” When she did not receive the promised services, she realized the fraud and filed a complaint with the N M Joshi Marg police station.

Arrests Made: Bihar-Based Gang Busted

In a related crackdown, Mumbai police arrested five individuals from Bihar for operating a fake website that offered helicopter rides over the Kumbh Mela. The gang lured devotees by offering discounted aerial tours, collected payments, and then disappeared without a trace. Victims filed complaints after realizing they had been duped, leading to the arrests.

Rising Trend: Online Scams During Religious Gatherings

While precise annual statistics on such scams are challenging to compile, authorities have observed a significant uptick in fraudulent activities surrounding large religious events like the Kumbh Mela. Cybercriminals set up fake websites and social media profiles, enticing devotees with exclusive services and accommodations at attractive prices. These scams often lead to substantial financial losses and emotional distress for the victims.

Preventive Measures: Authorities Step Up Vigilance

In response to the surge in online frauds, the Uttar Pradesh government has established a dedicated cyber police station in the Maha Kumbh Mela area. The authorities have deployed a team of 56 cyber experts and officers to monitor and neutralize threats from fake websites and malicious activities on social media platforms. As of December 2024, this team has identified and initiated action against 44 suspicious websites.
