In a heartfelt letter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to astronaut Sunita Williams, wishing her a safe return from space and inviting her to visit India. The letter, dated March 1 and released on Tuesday by Minister of State (PMO) Jitendra Singh, highlights India’s deep admiration for Williams and her extraordinary achievements in space exploration.
Sunita Williams is set to return to Earth on Wednesday after spending over nine months at the International Space Station (ISS). Technical delays prolonged her stay, making headlines worldwide and inspiring millions with her resilience.
India’s Pride in Sunita Williams
Modi’s letter expresses the nation’s pride in her contributions to space science. “1.4 billion Indians take immense pride in your achievements. Even though you are thousands of miles away, you remain close to our hearts. The people of India are praying for your safe return and continued success,” the Prime Minister wrote.
Williams, born to an Indian-Gujarati father, has always maintained a special connection with India. Modi fondly recalled meeting her and her late father, Dr. Deepak Pandya, during his US visit in 2016. “Your mother, Bonnie Pandya, must be eagerly waiting for your return,” Modi mentioned, acknowledging the emotional reunion awaiting Williams on Earth.
Modi’s Personal Interest in Williams’ Journey
Revealing his personal interest in Williams’ career, Modi shared how he has inquired about her well-being during his meetings with US leaders, including former Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden. He further emphasized India’s eagerness to welcome her back. “After your return, we are looking forward to seeing you in India. It will be a pleasure for the nation to host one of its most illustrious daughters,” the letter stated.
Astronaut Mike Massimino delivered the letter to Sunita Williams after meeting PM Modi on March 1. Later, Jitendra Singh revealed that Williams was deeply touched by the PM’s gesture and expressed her gratitude to both Modi and India.
