India and France have recently taken significant strides to bolster their defense partnership. Marking a new chapter in their strategic collaboration. The procurement of 26 Rafale-Marine fighter jets and the construction of three additional Scorpene submarines stand at the forefront of this enhanced cooperation. These initiatives not only aim to modernize India’s military capabilities but also underscore the deepening ties between the two nations.
Rafale-Marine Fighter Jets: Enhancing Aerial Prowess
The Indian Navy is set to acquire 26 Rafale-Marine fighter jets from France, a deal valued at approximately ₹63,000 crore. This acquisition includes 22 single-seat Rafale jets and four twin-seat trainers, along with associated weapons, simulators, spares, crew training, and logistics support. The Rafale-Marine, renowned for its versatility and advanced technology, is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of India’s aircraft carriers.
Scorpene Submarines: Strengthening Underwater Defense
In addition to the fighter jets, India plans to build three more Scorpene-class submarines in collaboration with France. These submarines will be constructed at Mumbai’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) under a deal estimated at ₹36,000 crore. The first submarine is slated for delivery in six years, with the subsequent two following at one-year intervals. This initiative builds upon the existing Project-75, under which six Scorpene submarines were developed, enhancing India’s underwater defense capabilities.
Joint Development of Advanced Engines
Beyond these acquisitions, India and France have agreed to co-develop advanced aeronautical technologies. A notable project involves the joint development of a combat aircraft engine by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and France’s Safran. A roadmap for this initiative is expected to be prepared before the end of the year.
Additionally, both nations are collaborating on the motorization of heavy-lift helicopters under India’s Multi Role Helicopter (IMRH) program. A shareholders’ agreement has been concluded between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engine for engine development.
A Strategic Partnership for the Future
These defense collaborations are part of a broader 25-year roadmap titled “Horizon 2047: 25th Anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership, Towards A Century of India-France Relations.” This roadmap emphasizes the commitment of both nations to co-develop and co-produce advanced defense technologies, reflecting a shared vision for a secure and prosperous future.
