Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep concern over reports alleging an attack on the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that such actions could dangerously escalate tensions amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Reacting to claims made by Russia, PM Modi underscored that diplomacy remains the only credible path to peace, urging all parties to avoid steps that could derail ongoing efforts to end hostilities.
“Avoid actions that undermine peace”: PM Modi
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he was deeply troubled by developments that could widen the scope of the conflict.
“Deeply concerned by reports of the targeting of the residence of the President of the Russian Federation. Ongoing diplomatic efforts offer the most viable path toward ending hostilities and achieving peace. We urge all concerned to remain focused on these efforts and to avoid any actions that could undermine them,” Modi stated.
Russia alleges drone attack, Ukraine denies claims
PM Modi’s remarks came a day after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov alleged that Ukraine attempted to strike President Putin’s state residence in Russia’s Novgorod region using long-range drones between December 28 and 29.
According to Lavrov, 91 long-range drones were launched during the alleged attack, all of which were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defence systems. He described the incident as “reckless” and labelled it “state terrorism”, warning that it would influence Moscow’s future approach to peace negotiations.
Russian authorities did not clarify whether President Putin was present at the residence at the time of the alleged incident.
Ukraine, however, categorically rejected the allegations. President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Moscow’s claims as “a complete fabrication” and accused Russia of lacking genuine intent to end the war.
Global reactions: US and China weigh in
The development triggered swift international reactions.
US President Donald Trump, who is attempting to mediate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, said he was “very angry” after learning about the alleged attack during a phone call with Putin.
“It’s one thing to be offensive, because they’re offensive. It’s another thing to attack his house. It’s not the right time to do any of that,” Trump told reporters in Florida.
China also called for restraint, with its foreign ministry urging all sides to prevent escalation and avoid spillover of the battlefield, according to Reuters.
