ORANGE ALERT: Karnataka – Coastal, Malnad districts

Heavy rains washed out the Coastal and Malnad districts of Karnataka on Sunday. The Meteorological Department issued a Red Alert for the following seven districts of Dakshina Kannada: Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Hassan, Kodagu, and Chikkamagaluru for the following 48 to 72 hours. In the next few hours, it subsided to an orange alert, while a yellow alert was declared upon the regions of North Karnataka.

The rain poured down due to the depression in the Bay of Bengal affected the Udupi region the worst. Mangalore University canceled all of its exams. Approximately 2,500 people were evacuated to security from low-lying areas, and 1,201 people shifted to 31 relief camps in Udupi.

The premises of the well-known Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt were inundated but its elevation saved the main temple area.

Three boats were capsized off the Malpe coast, and the fishermen were rescued by the NDRF personnel deputed in Mangaluru. “250 NDRF personnel have been deputed to Udupi and districts of Dakshina Kannada to assist in rescue operations,” – tweeted the Home minister Basavaraj Bommai, who is under home quarantine.

” I have spoken to revenue minister, R Ashoka to send a defence helicopter for rescue and relief operations in Udupi ” – came another tweet.

The Udupi deputy commissioner, G Jagadeesha, was asked to take stock of the situation and shift all people from low-lying areas to safe relief camps by the chief minister, BS Yediyurappa, who surveyed the case from Bangalore.
