In the fourth year of the India-China standoff along the LAC in eastern Ladakh, the Indian Air Force has played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s operational readiness and defense capabilities.
Rapid Troop Deployment and Equipment Transport
In response to the Galwan Valley clashes, the IAF initiated an unparalleled transport operation, airlifting a staggering 70,000 Army troops and heavy military equipment like tanks, artillery guns, and BMPs, collectively weighing over 9,000 tonnes. This mammoth effort facilitated the swift induction of over 68,000 troops, bolstering India’s overall strength along the LAC.
Strategic Airlift Capability
The IAF’s strategic airlift capability, demonstrated through the deployment of C-17 Globemaster III and C-130 J Super Hercules aircraft, played a pivotal role. These aircraft conducted multiple sorties, expediting troop and equipment movements and reducing response times during critical contingencies.
Helicopter Operations and Infrastructure Development
The IAF’s helicopters, including the Apache attack helicopters and Chinook heavy-lift helicopters, proved invaluable. Notably, they facilitated the installation of radars in remote areas and ensured the supply of essentials to military outposts. Furthermore, these helicopters were essential in casualty evacuation and supporting ambitious infrastructure projects, reflecting the IAF’s multifaceted contributions.
Strengthened Air Defense Network
Enhancing the region’s air defense network, the IAF strategically deployed radars at forward locations. Manned by vigilant air warriors round the clock, these radars enable real-time monitoring of potential aerial threats, augmenting India’s situational awareness and response capabilities.
Fighter Jet Deployments and ISR Operations
The IAF’s deployment of advanced fighter jets like Rafale, Su 30 MKIs, Mirage 2000s, and MiG-29s demonstrated its commitment to projecting a formidable presence. These fighter jets executed regular combat air patrols and performed critical Intelligence-Surveillance-Reconnaissance (ISR) roles, amplifying India’s operational insights.
Continuing Vigilance and Diplomatic Efforts
Despite some de-escalation, the IAF remains steadfast in its commitments, conducting regular sorties to support ongoing infrastructure development and operational activities. Diplomatic engagements, such as the upcoming 19th round of India-China Corps Commander-level talks, underscore India’s dedication to resolving legacy issues and maintaining stability.
