In the wake of the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 individuals—mostly tourists—India has stepped up its diplomatic and military response. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar confirmed that he discussed the matter with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, demanding accountability for those behind the act.
“Discussed the Pahalgam terrorist attack with US @SecRubio yesterday. Its perpetrators, backers and planners must be brought to justice,” Jaishankar posted on X (formerly Twitter).

United States Expresses Solidarity with India
Following the incident, Secretary Rubio strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “horrific act of terrorism” and conveyed condolences to the victims’ families.
He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to working with India on counter-terrorism efforts, while also encouraging both nations to prevent further escalation in South Asia.
India’s Strong Response: Diplomatic and Strategic Actions Taken
India has taken decisive steps in response to what it sees as a Pakistan-backed terror operation. These include:
- Suspending the Indus Water Treaty
- Closing the Integrated Check Post at Attari
- Reducing the strength of diplomatic staff in both High Commissions
The message is clear: India will not tolerate cross-border terrorism or provocation.
Continuous Ceasefire Violations: Army Responds Decisively
The Line of Control (LoC) has witnessed unprovoked firing from the Pakistan Army for the seventh consecutive night, particularly across Kupwara, Uri, and Akhnoor sectors.
The Indian Army responded proportionately but firmly, safeguarding national interests and maintaining operational readiness.
Earlier, similar violations on April 26–27 in the Tutmari Gali and Rampur sectors were also met with a strong response.
Armed Forces Granted Full Operational Freedom
Following a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), the Indian government has given the armed forces full operational freedom to respond to threats as they see fit.
Intelligence inputs suggest that the Pahalgam attack had cross-border links and was strategically timed after the successful elections in Jammu and Kashmir, aimed at disrupting peace in the region.
