The Nobel Prize for literature 2020 has been announced by the Swedish Academy on Thursday. American poet Louise Glück has been awarded this year’s prize as announced by the permanent secretary of the Swedish organisation, Mats Malm in Stockholm. The Swedish Academy said that the prize has been awarded to her “for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal”.

Usually, the winners of the prestigious Nobel Prize receive the award from King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony every year on December 10 in Stockholm, however, this year it has been replaced with a virtual ceremony showing the winners receiving their awards in their respective home countries. The award consists of 10 million kronor or more than 1.1 million USD as a prize.

The announcement came on Thursday after it was postponed in 2018 as several allegations regarding sex abuse surfaced against the Swedish Academy.
