The murder of Chandranath Rath, the trusted aide and personal assistant of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, has triggered massive political reactions across West Bengal, with investigators probing whether the attack was politically motivated or linked to another organised conspiracy.
Rath was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas, late Wednesday night. According to police sources, the murder appears to have been carefully planned, with reports suggesting that the attackers conducted surveillance and recce operations for several days before executing the attack.
The killing comes at a time when West Bengal is witnessing intense political tension following the recent assembly election results, where the BJP secured a major victory with 207 seats.
From Indian Air Force Officer to BJP’s ‘Mr Dependable’
Chandranath Rath, 41, was far more than a regular political assistant. Originally from Purba Medinipur, Rath had served in the Indian Air Force for nearly 20 years before taking voluntary retirement.
He completed his education at Rahara Ramakrishna Mission and was reportedly deeply influenced by its disciplined and spiritual environment. After a brief stint in the corporate sector, Rath gradually entered political organisational work and officially joined Suvendu Adhikari’s team around 2019.
Over the years, he became one of Adhikari’s most trusted backroom coordinators, managing campaign logistics, organisational planning, administrative work, and sensitive political coordination.
Within BJP circles, Rath was widely known as “Mr Dependable” because of his loyalty, low-profile nature, and ability to manage critical operations without seeking public attention.
Political Angle Under Scanner, But No Official Confirmation Yet
While BJP leaders have strongly condemned the killing and raised concerns over Bengal’s political atmosphere, police have not officially confirmed any political link behind the murder.
Speaking after the incident, Suvendu Adhikari urged supporters not to take the law into their hands and said the investigation must be allowed to proceed fairly. He stated that police believe the murder was “planned in cold blood” and confirmed that a vehicle was used during the crime.
At the same time, Adhikari also clarified that the incident “may or may not be related to politics.”
Several BJP leaders, including Agnimitra Paul and Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhary, described Rath as an apolitical and dependable person who handled key responsibilities within the party and state assembly operations.
Political observers believe multiple angles are now under investigation, including:
- Political rivalry
- Organised criminal involvement
- Personal enmity
- Internal disputes or targeted retaliation
So far, no arrests have been officially announced, and authorities are examining CCTV footage, vehicle movement, and local intelligence inputs to identify those responsible.

Chandranath Rath’s journey from an Indian Air Force serviceman to one of Bengal BJP’s most trusted political coordinators reflects a life built on discipline, loyalty, and strategic organisational work. His sudden murder has shocked political circles across West Bengal and intensified concerns over security and political violence in the state.
As investigations continue, the biggest question remains unanswered — was Rath targeted because of his political proximity to Suvendu Adhikari, or is there a deeper conspiracy behind the killing?
